Recommend me some of your must have Mac apps

Hello everyone, just got my Mac last week, I’ve set it up and it’s ready to go, this is my first time using a Mac, can y’all recommend some must have apps and what they do, and if y’all have tips and general knowledge for new Mac user, I’d appreciate that too, ps: free apps are more preferable, thanks 🙏🏿

I’m using a number of his free apps and a paid app and I love them all. Usually, they’re simple apps that do one or a few things very well. Highly recommended.

In no particular order:

1Password

Raycast

Backblaze

Fantastical

ChatGPT (official)

Mimestream

Audio Hijack

SteerMouse

AppCleaner

Curiousity question: I tried backblaze a few years ago and found my computer would always be running fans and the upload was molasses and seemed really not worth it as a tool. What has your experience been with the tool? And, why would you use backblaze as opposed to Drive or Dropbox?

Honestly, I think the must-have for a newcomer to macOS is probably a window manager. There are loads. My personal preference is for. I actually use Rectangle Pro since there are custom layouts with shortcut keys which I like for my workflow. There are alternatives such as Magnet, Swish, Moom and Wins. There are also quite a few examples of apps that have window management functionality amongst one of their many features: Keyboard Maestro, Raycast, BetterTouchTool, but I believe starting off with a simpler window manager at the beginning would be a good choice.

 Rectangle

Otherwise there are plenty of amazing apps. I couldn’t live without Alfred, Shottr or Maccy. But I think it’s wise to get to know the base OS for now and then supplant with utilities and apps that will plug in the areas you think need added functionality. Hidden Bar, Keyboard Maestro and Dato I would add to that list of must haves as well to be honest.

You can checkout, a Dock replacement that adds a lot of nice features. Especially if you are coming from Windows you might find it more convenient than the standard Dock.

But I might be biased since I‘m the author :)

I believe you’ll be happier having something for these areas (with what I use and/or notesin parentheses):

Folder management (Hazel)

Menubar management (Bartender)

Clipboard Manager (maccy is free, versions come with Keyboard Maestro, BetterTouchTool, Alfred and Raycast, plus many many other standalone and package apps - use whatever you like, but avoid paying a subscription unless it’s for a feature you know you can’t get anywhere)

tab switching - (there’s AltTab, but also look into App Launchers in packages like Raycast - the native Spotlight sucks - and/or using Mission Control)

File Tree Explorer (Qspace - Finder sucks)

Network Firewall (Little Sneak - turn off backchannel communication, like to Qspace developers in China, if you’re working inclined)

Moving stuff around (Dropover - though I’m finding I use this less as I have more Hazel automations)

Also, if you’re a coder or otherwise technically inclined, kitty or iterm2 for a better terminal, and homebrew for CLI based application app downloading and uploading.

Swish and Paste, almost feel like they should be native apps/functions to macOSx but unfortunately not

SoundSource, a “simple” audio mixer like the one in windows: you can lower the youtube volume while listening to a zoom call at max volume and mute the audio from apple music.

Basic stuff but IOS won’t allow you to do so with the vanilla os

Rectangle

AltTab

All of them are free and open-source

It kinda depends on what you want to do. But my go to free and paid softwares are:

BitWarden for Password management (But the Apple native one is good as well)

Firefox if you dont like Safari. I would avoid chrome at any and all cost from today due to them amking adblocking impossible.

If you have a messy download folder or desktop, I recommend Folder Tidy.

LuLu for more advanced firewall features. If you dont know why you would need that, then you don’t need it.

Foxit PDF Reader is nice.

FileZilla Pro if you ever need to move a large amount of files to and from DropBox, OneCloud Amason S3 etc.

DaVinci Resolve if you need a video editor and do not want to pay 299 for FCPX

For Photoshop replacement look at Affinityu Photo and Affinity Designer. Vectornator is good too.

DiskDiet for finding out what is eating up your diskspace. Or DaisyDisk.

Gemini 2 is great in finding duplicate files but if you want a free option go for DupeGuru.

Magnet for managing window tiling.

Loopback and SoundSource from Rouge Amoeba are the best tools you will get for managing sound and routing sounds. Must have for anyone creative like streamers, youtubers, musicians etc.

Scrivener for writing books, and doing research. Pages is nice but this is better, and it offline.

SimpleMind for mindmapping.

Alfred for better Spotlight (that’s what Search is called on Mac) results.

If you want to do any gaming and have steam games that are only Windows, then get GeForce NOW for streaming games to your mac.

that should get you started
